Safety Explained

Historically, Woolpresses & Wool Sheds can be dangerous places to work. With Worksafe now having the industry under the microscope, we have responded with products that exceed standards imposed by Worksafe.

Did you know that business owners (wool growers) have a duty of care when it comes to safety? The WHS Act 2011 states:

A person conducting a business or undertaking must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of:
  1. workers engaged, or caused to be engaged by the person; and
  2. workers whose activities in carrying out work are influenced or directed by the person; while workers are at work in the business or undertaking
  3. a person conducting a business or undertaking must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, that the health and safety of other persons is not put at risk from work carried out as part of the conduct of the business or undertaking.

This is just a snippet of what is likely to become legislation in the near future

Safety & Australian Standards

In addition to surpassing current WHS guidelines, all Aussie Woolpress products have been tested to the following standards:

  • AS/NZ 4024 – Safety of machinery. The objective of the safety of machinery standard is to enable designers, manufacturers, employers and employees to minimise safety risks by providing technical guidelines
  • AS/NZ 3000 – Sets out the requirements for the design, construction & verification of electrical installations, including the selection and installation of electrical equipment forming part of such electrical installations.
  • AS/NZ 3760 – Is the current Test & Tag standard. Its main goal is to ensure equipment is safe by setting out recommendations in relation to testing 240v, 3 phase and low voltage electrical equipment

Safety Categories Explained

During the AS/NZ 4024 assessment process, equipment will be categorised in one of five categories dependant upon the risks the machine poses.

  • Category B – Relates to a standard product not designed for a safety application.
  • Category 1 – The requirements of category B apply together with the use of well tried safety components and safety principals
  • Category 2- The requirements of category B and 1 apply plus; The safety function(s) shall be checked at machine start up and periodically by the machine control system. If a fault is detected a safe state shall be initiated or if this is not possible, a warning shall be given.
  • Category 3 – The requirements of Categories B, 1 & 2 apply plus; The system shall be designed so that a single fault in any of its parts does not lead to the loss of a safety function.
  • Category 4 – The requirements of categories B, 1, 2, & 3 apply plus; The single fault is detected at of before the next demand on the safety function. If this detection is not possible then an accumulation of faults shall not lead to a loss of safety function.
